Communication Research: Why is it important in the Sports World?

Communication Research in the Sports World is designed to help with how the players could be coached by watching their sports performance. Through this observation, the coach will be able to develop different techniques and programs to use in guiding the player to perform better. This will help with how the athletes will function moving forward throughout the game.

Some of these motivational factors in the research are: finding the intended outcomes, theoretical preferences, and using methodological preferences. In  determining the Intended outcome, this includes understanding the players. Understanding the players strength and weakness. In doing this they will be able to determine what position they are best at playing and the coach will be able to use this information to place the players in their best position for a great outcome. Another intended outcome comes from prediction and control. These ideas are able to help in planning your plays, with predicting what the other teams will do once you complete your plan and plays. When the coach compiles his team and completes the layout of the plays, it is up to the coach to predict what the other teams will do, which way they will go and how they will react to your team’s moves. After the coach plans and predicts there is one last intended outcome idea and this is when the culture changes this affects the way the players will need to perform. For example when the world was hit with COVID, this changed the way the players practiced and whether or not they were able to play together. The teams and players needed to follow the protocol for their arena. Some arenas mandated vaccination and because of this certain players cannot play in certain states because they are not mandated. This has caused players to be banned from playing with their teams and not being able to play at games. The research of COVID has caused a shift in the sports world and is still changing.

Other factors are theoretical and methodological preferences.

Theoretical preferences could be when the coach is drawing up the plays that he wants the players to try and this could influence the way a player can accomplish the plays while communicating with their teammates. In practicing these theoretical preferences the players will become experts through methodological preferences, which would mean that they act out the theories to prove them during their game and as time progresses they become an expert in that field. In the methodologies of that specific practice there are different paradigms that these studies can be broken into: rhetorical methodologies, quantitative methodologies and qualitative methodologies.

These methodologies can play out in sports through the research needed to communicate amongst the players, coaches and management. The rhetorical research helps us to better determine how the messages sent to each player or coach are received and if they are effective or ineffective. If the coach communicates correctly to the player and the player receives what the coach is stating and agrees with them, then the play could possibly work, but there are instances when the player may not necessarily agree with the coach or play and decide to do their own play and the game could be unsuccessful. This communication could be examined through quantitative study on the percent of players that listen to their coaches or not. This study can help in determining how successful a team will be because of their players performances and acknowledgement of communication between coaches and players. This is valuable information in determining the similarities and differences between teams and coaches. Although quantitative is direct data and patterns of research of the players and coaches performance from communication, Qualitative communication. This research is determined after a player has performed in their game and the study will be able to determine if the player listening to their coach was successful or not. This would not be able to be completed until after the games and plays are done. This is the lived experience research. All of these steps are important in determining Research Communication throughout sports and their players.
